About Us

An anchor of the Classical Era of music, Ludwig Van Beethoven, performed effortlessly in concert halls as a pianist virtuoso as well as in salons creating popular music through improvisation. Most significantly, he is renowned as the composer who bridged the movement from the Classical Era into the Romantic Era of music in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Beethoven, “Hero of Musical Innovation”, was chosen as the namesake for The Beethoven Society, which was formed in 1927 in Melrose, Massachusetts.

A group of professional musicians created the Beethoven Society. They met at the homes of the members on a regular basis, like the salons of the 1700s, taking turns performing for each other. These small gatherings began to draw interest from family members wanting to enjoy the performances. Thus, a larger audience grew. In the 1970s, talented, amateur musicians who had heard of the society asked if they could become members. The society allowed them to audition, and many were invited to join. Word about these ‘salon’ performances began to spread throughout the community and the concerts were opened to the public. To accommodate the growing attendees, performances were moved from homes to local church halls. Currently, The Beethoven Society provides eight concerts a year open to the public featuring talented musicians performing varied styles of music such as chamber music, opera, musical theatre, jazz, and new compositions. The concerts feature a range of professional and skilled amateur instrumentalists and vocalists from Melrose and across the area.
